Continuing our spring flower series, next up is the attractive spring annual, Zinnias. Zinnias look similar to Dahlias except they have dome shaped brightly colored filaments which attract butterflies, swallowtails, and hummingbirds. Planting:
Unlike certain flowers in this series, Zinnias do not like to be transplanted. Therefore, it’s best to sow Zinnias directly into the area you plan to grow them. If you must sow Zinnias indoors use biodegradable seedling planters that can be planted directly into the ground. Zinnias roots are sensitive and will not tolerate being transplanted. Zinnias are best planted around Mother’s Day for flowers in early July that will last through the summer. After Zinnias have been sowed, they can be cared for quite similarly to Marigolds.
Care:
· Plant in an area with full sun
· Sow 3-4 inches deep under rich soil
· Mulch flower bed in order to prevent excess weeds.
· Keep soil moist but not waterlogged
· Zinnias thrive with light fertilization throughout the summer
