If you’re ready for this past winter to be over just
remember that a fabulous spring is just around the corner. If you’re anything
like me, this is the time of year I start feeling antsy for warmer weather
activities. Speaking of which, one of my all-time favorite spring activities is
going on a picnic. I grew up going on picnics with my family and those are
memories I’ll always cherish. However, if you’re planning on doing a family
picnic, make sure you make a quick checklist first. Keep reading below for the
essentials of a successful picnic.
Picnic Basket/Cooler
Good food is a big determining factor on the success of your
picnic and obviously you’ll need a way to transport it. The old fashioned
picnic basket is laced with nostalgia and style but a more practical option
might be a good sized cooler. Modern coolers are quite inexpensive and also do
a great job keeping food and drink cold. No one likes a warm mushy sandwich on
a picnic.
Picnic Blanket
This item also has nostalgic and stylistic appeal but is
also very practical. There’s nothing like spreading out a comfy blanket in the
grass and just taking it all in. In my family we have a designated patch quilt
just for this purpose.
Sunglasses
In my opinion the importance of good sunglasses can’t be
understated. Anytime you’re spending prolonged periods of time in the sun
you’ll want to be equipped with a good pair of shades.
Plastic Tumblers/
Utensils
I recall one family picnic when my mother forgot all the
utensils for our summer picnic and we ended up paying a local vendor for a
sleeve of plastic cups after some careful negotiating from my father. These
days they make some very nice reusable plastic tumblers and utensils which work
perfect for camping and don’t produce unnecessary waste. If you’re having
trouble finding durable plastic utensils check out the camping section of your
local sporting goods store.
Good Food
In my opinion, the better the food the better the picnic.
Sandwiches are the tried and true staple of picnics but with a bit more
planning you can explore your inner foodie. Mediterranean style salads are
perfect for picnics and most can be made days ahead of time. Also enlist the
family for help with the food prep and to ensure everyone is pleased with the
options!
