Sunflowers are some of the most cheery flowers we can have in our gardens. And nothing says summer better than bright and beautiful sunflowers. Continue reading below for tips on growing and caring for sunflowers.
Planting:
Plant sunflowers in the spring well after first frost in an area that gets full sun. Sunflowers aren’t too picky with soil but their roots need room to expand so it’s important that the soil has been worked before sowing. Plant sunflower rows about 30 inches apart and individual plants 6-8 inches apart and 2-6 inches deep depending on the variety. Again, make sure the soil has been worked before sowing seeds. A light application of fertilizer is all that your sunflowers will need for the season.
Care:
· Make sure sunflowers get a decent amount of water but never waterlog the soil
· Most sunflower varieties will do well with just one application of fertilizer in the spring
· Seedlings may need to be propped up with extra soil so they don’t blow over in the wind
· Birds love sunflower seeds, if this is an issue covering the seeds with burlap or garden mesh
· Sunflowers are annuals but can be easily planted year to year from the seeds of your past harvest
