Replacing home windows is no small endeavor. Sometimes windows can be refurbished or repaired. However, older windows may simply be much less efficient than newer windows. Below I’ll give some advice about when to notice the warning signs and consider replacement.
1. Drafts and temperature changescan be felt coming in or around the window.
2. It is difficult to open and close the window and basic cleaning doesn’t help.
3. If there’s visible damagesuch as chipping, deterioration or water stains on or around the window.
4. If you have single pane windows. There is a good chance if your house was built before 1970 and still has its original windows that they are made of single pane glass. Today’s windows have much higher efficiency and safety standards and are made from double, or triple pane glass. Single pane glass windows are sub-standard, drafty, and occasionally unsafe.
5. If they are hard to clean. If cleaning your windows has become a total hassle there are many features in new windows that make cleaning a snap.
6. If replacement parts are hard to findor have been discontinued.
7. If there is an increase on your energy bill. Older windows lack proper insulation and older windows and doors may be ill fitting which may force your air conditioning or heating to work harder costing you extra every month.
8. If there’s excessive outside noise. If you’re hearing outside noise when your windows are closed, chances are they aren’t providing enough acoustic insulation.
9. If carpet, furniture and window treatments have started to fade. Single pane glass does a terrible job of keeping out UV rays that enter through your homes windows and can cause fading. Newer glass types such as Low E reduces most of the UVB light and helps minimize heating and cooling costs. Laminated and tinted glass will help block UVA rays.
10. If they look bad. Windows are one of the main things people consider when looking for a new home. Installing windows isn’t cheap, but keep in mind that they can add tremendous lasting value to your home.
