How to Melt Ice on Walkways Without Rock Salt

Use these tips to prevent dangerous slippery walkways this winter. These methods are also more environmentally and budget friendly than toxic and corrosive rock salt.
1.     Magnesium Chloride
Magnesium Chloride is a good alternative to rock salt. Magnesium Chloride is more environmentally friendly than rock salt and is also safe for plants and pets. Certain types of magnesium chloride can be a bit more expensive than rock salt but a little goes a long way and most are willing to pay more for the peace of mind of a safer product.

2.     Rubbing Alcohol

Rubbing alcohol solution is perhaps one of the best household deicers. 70 percent rubbing alcohol has an extremely low melting point and this ubiquitous solution is most likely already in your cabinet. So before running to the store, check to see if you have rubbing alcohol lying around for a great alternative to rock salt. Simply pour the solution on affected areas or mix the solution with one part warm water and use a spray bottle to spray on walkways for lasting ice protection. In the worst of winter you may need to reapply several times.

3.     Kitty Litter
This one might sound different, but if you have cats this could be a cost effective solution as a                 deicer. Unlike the solutions mentioned above, kitty litter doesn’t actually deice but instead               provides much needed traction to the slippery area. If you’re short on time and already have kitty litter this can be an effective and quick option. In fact, any course material such as sand/gravel or wood chips can be used to provide extra traction.

If you were thinking of running out to buy rock salt hopefully these tips show you that you have               options! Good luck and stay safe this winter!
