It’s not uncommon to beautify our front porch or stoop during the warmer months and the holidays, but what about the cold and dark months of mid-winter? If you’re looking to brighten your homes façade take a look below for decoration ideas to help you get started!
1. Homemade Wreaths
Homemade wreaths are one of my favorite decorations period. My love for D.I.Y. wreaths only grew when a friend showed me that one wreath can be easily modified for the particular season or holiday. If you buy or make a stock wreath you can easily add and take away decorations for the desired effect. For example, our homes Christmas wreath was easily modified by taking off the mistletoe and Evergreen sprigs and adding some D.I.Y. white and pink heart decorations.
2. Natural Arrangements
Have some extra winter squash, driftwood, or other natural materials lying around? These can be arranged in creative ways to best represent the season or holiday. Pumpkins and other types of Squash are often displayed in the fall and early winter but some varieties (particularly white or bluish grey) look great for the whole season. Driftwood, frost resistant plants (depending on your areas zone) or other natural materials can also be arranged to make attractive decorations.
3. Furniture
Weatherproof furniture can also add a lovely and welcoming effect to our homes façade. Try adding a splash of color to your furniture for a modern and eye catching look. Sometimes it’s helpful to think of the natural colors of your homes façade such as the flora in your garden for matching purposes. Yard furniture can add an excellent complement to your home and garden and it creates a space where friends and family can appreciate your efforts.
4. Entryway Features
Sometimes it’s not the destination but the journey. Our front porch welcomes guests to our home but if your walkway is dangerous or otherwise lacking it could hurt the first impression of the home. In fact, many potential homebuyers will form strong opinions before even entering a home. There are many ways to improve the entrance to your home. Adding some color with a fresh coat of paint to the front door is often a great place to start. If you have rusted wrought iron posting, gating, or railings refresh them with spray paint made for use on metal surfaces. Or create a natural looking walkway using found or purchased stones. Do some additional research to know exactly what you’re looking for and how to accomplish it!
5. Decorative Evergreens
This is another great D.I.Y. entryway idea. Most types of Evergreens can handle freezing temperatures making this an ideal plant for winter decorating. Also, similarly to the wreaths, Evergreens can be decorated in an unlimited number or ways depending on the season or effect you’re trying to achieve.
