Home gardens are just one of the many added benefits of being a homeowner. Gardens offer us a peaceful reprieve to relax and enjoy nature’s beauty. However, starting a home garden requires two of our most precious resources; money and time. Anyone who’s attempted a home garden knows that buying all the right materials for a successful garden can get expensive. Below I’ll give some tips about how to get a great garden going on a budget.
Compost
I’ve always wanted my own garden. So when I finally bought my first home several years ago I knew that a garden was in the cards. However, I had one huge problem, my soil was awful… I quickly realized that on top of all my new home costs I wouldn’t be able to afford the amount of soil required to get my garden in working shape. That’s when I acquiesced, and admitted my garden would have to wait a year. I also made a committed to compost EVERYTHING! Not literally everything of course, no cooked proteins, oils, or any unnatural home products, but just about everything else! Used coffee grounds, banana peels, and eggshells are common kitchen waste items that also make some of the best composting material. To start a compost bin, simply get a large durable plastic waste bin and drill holes all over the sides of the bin. Compost needs air in order properly decompose. Place the bin in a convenient spot but consider keeping it away from entryways because compost can produce a smell. Another option is to simply start an open compost pile in your yard. Before starting your compost, do a bit of additional research to see what materials you can and cant compost.
Regrow Food Scraps
At one point in our history, sustainability wasn’t just a trendy word; it was a way of life. In those agrarian days before Home and Garden stores, seed saving and using food scraps to regrow plants was common practice. Some plants such as basil, bok choy, cabbage, carrots, cilantro, etc. only need a jar with some water and a bit of sunlight to regrow into edible plants. Regrowing food scraps is surprisingly easy and another great way to slim down your home garden expense. Do some additional research about the specific type of plant you’re trying to regrow.
Scan “Free Lists”
Craiglist, KSL, or other classifieds can be a great place to find free garden supplies or plants. Scan the “free” section, especially in the early spring to find amazing deals on seeds, plants, and items that can be reused or repurposed for your garden. Garage or estate sales may be another opportunity to snag up some discount garden supplies.
Other Ideas to Consider:
· Reusing containers as plant pots
· Paint old fencing or unsightly areas
· Keep your vegetable garden small
· DIY stepping stones
· Tic-Tac or other small containers for seed storage
· Toilet rolls as seed starters
· Egg cartons as seed trays
So if you’re on a tight budget but also want a great garden, don’t worry! Gardening on a budget is all about being creative! I hope these tips have encouraged you to continue your passion for gardening without breaking the bank.
