It’s a no-brainer that you enjoy your deck well all summer long. Then its time you take care of our deck as heavy use, incidental and sun damage can take a toll on you,r deck during the summer months, but after summer comes to fall and fall turn winter – which is another problem. SO, before the colder season set in, it is time to take care of your deck; doing this will save you from costly repairs and also make sure it's in good condition for the next warm weather. The question you should ask yourself is if your deck is ready for winter, if not then consider, the following tips for winterizing your deck:
1. Trim any overhanging branches and pack dirt’s
If you have trees with large branches hanging around your deck then it’s time to assess their stability and clear of the dirt’s. For those who live in an area that is prone to ice, then consider trimming this branches before the ice storm.
2. Power Wash
Give your deck a good power wash before the cold winter weather, to remove any heavy stains or mildew from the fall. You don’t have any reason to leave them all winter long and make sure you remove all mildew thoroughly. You can apply formulated cleaner if it doesn’t come off with a standard cleaner.
3. The water test
To be sure that your deck is ready for the winter season, lightly coat your deck with water and check if the water pool or soak into the planks. If the water soaks then it is time to restain and replace those boards to make sure it repel water. A plank that pools may be more prone to rot than other areas and will continue to hold water.
4. Seal your wood deck
This is more like the fourth tip, but the question is when did you waterproofed or stained your wood deck last? But, how frequent you do this will depend on your climate. So, if it has been long you did this then its time you do it again.
5. Store your deck furniture
Except you have been finding an excuse to get rid of your old furniture, then don’t leave your outdoor furniture out all winter. Store them away in your basement or garage; this furniture can include plant containers especially ceramic ones because they might crack if you leave them outside all winter.
The bottom line is that your deck is an essential part of your outdoor living space and taking care of it is very important. With a little preparation and care, it can be in great shape and ready for when winters roll back around.
