Summer months can be uncomfortably hot, and just like us, plants too can feel the effects that heat. Your trees may becomeweak, dehydrated, dry, and prone to illnesses. Due to the high temperature and change in weather, your plants may need special care so they can remain healthy. Here are six things you can try out to help maintain your garden and trees in the summer.
1. Get your trees checked out by a professional
Take advantage of the weather and call a professional tree service to come tocheck the overall health of the trees in your yard. A certified arborist can help you identify the special needs of your garden and even suggest techniques, treatments, and procedures that’ll keep your plants healthy. They will identify and take care of any problem that may be present and also give you advice on how to take proper care of your garden and trees.
2. Plants should be watered regularly
For proper growth, you need to water your plants two times daily; once in the morning and once in the evening. This timeframes will give your plants enough time to absorb the water before it’ll evaporate under the high heat.
3. Maintain a healthy soil
A widely-used technique that can help keep your plants and trees moist during the hot summer month(s) is mulching. In addition to retaining water and moisture, organic mulches such as leaves, wood chips, and bark also add nutrients to the soil as they are decomposing. If there’s a layer of mulch in your soil, simply use a watering spike to help get the water through to the roots.
4. Group plants according to their water needs
Going out regularly under the hot sun can be an exhausting task for you. You can, however, make things easier for yourself by grouping plants according to their water needs. Plants that need a lot of water will be in one group, while those that need less water will be in the other group. This will make it easier for you to keep track of the amount of water needed by each plant and also ensure that they have enough water.
5. Potted plants should be stored in shady areas
Potted plants should be kept in areas where they’ll get adequate protection from the scorching sun rays. If you have an area that’s covered, you can keep them there. If necessary, you may decide to transplant trees such as palms so that they can provide shade to your potted plants, and to you if the need arises.
6. Take proper care of your lawn
If you notice that the grass in your backyard or garden is getting too dry, you may want to invest in a good water sprinkler system. They are more efficient as they provide water for longer periods at a slower rate. Lawns are hard to maintain when the weather is really hot, and they’ll only grow back better once the weather changes. You can use soil wetting agents and some fertilizers on your lawn to make it easier to maintain.
