Planning for a picnic seems like the easiest thing to do. You get some food, locate a nice shady area to sit and eat with your picnic guest. But there’s more to a successful picnic than just good food. Packing for a picnic may sound easy, but you’d be surprised at the number of people that forget the most essential picnic supplies. If you’ve never been on a picnic, then you should know that there are some things you don’t want to leave behind. A picnic should be a fun outing, but nothing ruins a picnic faster than if you haveto look for supplies. Here are a few essential items you need to add to your picnic basket.
1. Blanket
This is literally the foundation of any picnic and should be the first thing you pack in your picnic basket (after the food obviously). Since your picnic is guaranteed to have some amount of unavoidable carnage like dirt, spilled wine, and sauce, you’ll want to pack a blanket that you can toss into the laundry afterward. Some good blanket choices include tablecloths, cotton throws, sturdy quilts and Turkish towels.
2. Basket
Most picnic goers have had to be creative in their choice of picnic carriers. They’ve hadto use stockpots, laundry baskets, tin pails, strollers, canvas totes, and even a little red wagon. But the best choice for a carrier is a woven-wood picnic basket. If you’re considering getting one, you may want to get one with a flat-top lid. That way, it can double as a miniature tabletop for your drinks once you’re seated. Of course, you could always come with a tray or two. You can get some nice woven-wood picnic baskets at flea markets and estate sales, and online.
3. Place settings
The number one consideration when choosing a place setting is the weight. Don’t forget you’ll have to carry the basket to the park so if you load it with heavy wares, your arms will tire out fast. If it’s just going to be two at the picnic, then you might want to bring out the china plates, linen napkins, wine glasses, and silver-plated flatware. If you’re having a big picnic with lots of people, then you may pack disposable utensils, cups, napkins, and dishware. Make sure you get compostable items.
4. Bug Repellent
If you ask anyone who has ever been on a picnic what the one thing is that almost ruined their picnic experience, they’ll tell you rain or bugs. While you can’t do much about the rain, there’s plenty you can do about the bugs. A citronella candle or a can of bug repellent is easy to carry around and you’ll be grateful you did.
5. Knife & Corkscrew
This is one of the most essential picnic supplies. There’s a high probability that you’ll use a knife at some point in the picnic, whether in cutting cheese or to spread jam. If you brought a bottle of champagne or wine, a corkscrew will make sure that you can enjoy your beverage. Imagine looking forward to a nice bottle of wine only to realize you can’t open it. You can choose to buy the corkscrew and knife separately, but the combination tool is much more convenient.
