The Importance of Windows
Just as our eyes are said to be the windows to our souls;
windows are the eyes to our home. Whether you are looking inside-out or
outside-in, windows perfectly frame what we see and can make or break a scenery.
When upgrading your windows or designing new ones, it is
important to consider not just their aesthetic value, but their practicality,
safety and security worth too.
For some helpful ideas on selecting the perfect windows for
you and your home, read my Top Tips on Window Shopping:
- Coordinate
your windows to suit your house's original style. Remember what attracted
you to your house in the first place; is it classy and new-age or old and
Gothic? Research specific window styles that match your homes structure to
compliment it.
- Decipher
what each of your windows will function as. Perhaps some windows will be
used essentially for ventilation purposes, such as in the bathroom, whilst
others are primarily used to frame a glorious garden view. If you are looking
to gain more natural light in your home, consider installing French doors.
French doors which will increase the amount of sunlight in to your home,
expand your view and provide you with additional access to your outside
area.
- Choose
windows that will look great from all angles; outside and inside.
Remember that the majority of the time you will be looking out of
them from inside your home, so make sure that they don't just look nice,
they are practical for what you require of them also; for views? For
opening?
- Consider
which window frame material will suit your home best; wood, metal,
aluminum? Don't be shy to try a splash of colour either to really make
your windows stand-out from the neighbours!
- Don't
be afraid of big, statement making windows. Even if you feel a little
exposed, or if the sun has a habit of shining in on you; you can simply
add some blinds or curtains to add a touch of privacy and offer shade
relief.
- Always
choose double glazing windows. Double glazing glass is highly energy efficient,
noise reducing and secure.
- Don't
forget to give some thought to safety and consider the types of windows
you will be installing and the unlikely, yet potential risks that come
with them. Always ensure that you have secure locks fitted and never leave
windows open whilst you are out or at night when sleeping.
