When you
are new to the idea of building your own house and everything that comes with
it, some parts may be confusing to you. This may include choosing the right
type of windows for your home.

You may
have seen how these windows look like but you don’t know what to call them. You
might also think that there isn’t much of a different between these types
because a window is just a window, right? As long as it lets air and sunlight
get in the house, then that’s it.
We beg to
differ. Windows are very important parts of the house and they should be given
the proper attention when choosing the right design. Choosing designs for your
windows will not only affect the look of the house. It will also affect your
interior design, the ventilation, the amount of light that gets in the house
and the overall ambience.
So you see,
choosing the right window type is important. Therefore, we want to help you
choose wisely. Below, we have listed the different types of windows and some
important facts that could help you choose the right one.
Double and Single Hung Windows
We’re sure
that you have seen this type of window somewhere. This is the window that
slides up and down inside the frame. So it’s basically a sliding window.
Single Hung
windows have only one sash that moves. The other side remains stationary. While
for double hung windows, both the top and bottom sash move.
Casement Windows
This is the
window design where you can open the window going outward. It is hinged either
on the left side or the right side and it opens by turning a crank.
Awning Windows
This is the
type of window that is hinged at the top and opens outward. Some people choose
this type of window because it allows air to flow from both sides and from the
bottom. It’s perfect for houses in elevated areas. These are also usually
installed below or above another window design.
Picture Windows
Do you have
picturesque view outside your house-to-be? If you want to enjoy that scene
every day and be inspired by nature’s work of art, then we recommend a picture
window. It is a stationary window – meaning, it doesn’t move. It doesn’t have
hinges or wings that can be pushed or pulled. It’s like a picture frame, hence
the name. This type of window is usually made up of wood frames and a large
size of glass.
Transom Windows
Transom
windows are the typical window type. It has a left and right sash and the sash
have hinges on their left or right side. This type of windows can be stationary
or it can be opened, so it’s dual purpose.
Slider Windows
We have the
double and single hung windows, and then we have the slider windows. The only
difference is that while double and single hung operates by sliding the window
up or down, slider windows work by sliding the windows horizontally. It could
be double slider, where both sides move and it could be single slider where
only one side moves.
Bay and Bow Windows
Have you
ever seen those windows that somehow forms an arc beside a house? Some of them
look like doors but they don’t work like doors, because they aren’t. These are
called bay and bow windows. This type of window is used when you have
additional floor space and you want to somehow accentuate the architecture of
your house in that space.
Bay windows
fit more to modern designs while the bow windows are those with the arc-like
curve at the top, which is somehow fit to older Victorian style homes. It has
to be noted that bow windows are much pricey than the bay windows, if you are
planning to choose this type.
There you
have it. Now that you have the background of the different types of windows, we
encourage you to choose wisely. At AMSCO Windows,
we have a variety of designs to choose from for each type and we are sure that
you can find one that fits your home design.
